Chapter Meeting

Domain modeling: How can it boost your business analysis powers?

Topic Overview

The typical “system shall” list of requirements is long, unwieldy, disorganized, incomplete, inconsistent and incorrect.  Savvy business analysts know that – even if they must keep a pro forma “system shall” list – their analysis ability is greatly enhanced by using a domain model.  Not only does this model record requirements more concisely and verifiably, it actually assists the business analyst in eliciting the real business requirements in the first place.  This talk will show what a good domain model can do for your business analysis skills and productivity.

Key Learning Objectives:

At the end of the talk you will:

  • Understand the basics of the domain model.
  • Know how to use the domain model to record certain kinds of business rules and requirements.
  • See how the domain model can trace back to a standard requirements list, if necessary.
  • Appreciate the domain model’s benefits for the business analyst.
